How to choose pyjamas: fabric, cut and size
We spend a third of our lives at night, and a good part of our weekends in loungewear: pyjamas deserve to be chosen with care. Fabric, cut, season, size — here are the pointers for finding the pair you truly feel good in.
Choosing the fabric for the season
- Cotton and ribbed knit: soft and breathable, they are ideal all year round. Ribbed knit moves with you without feeling tight.
- Satin: fluid and cool to the touch, it glides over the skin and doesn't rumple your hair. It's especially popular in warmer weather, or for a dressier pair of pyjamas.
- Swiss dot and broderie anglaise: light, textured cottons, perfect for summer.
- Fluffy fabric: thick and cosy, it makes the pyjama bottoms for winter evenings.
If you often feel hot at night, go for natural fabrics and loose cuts; if you feel the cold, opt for long sleeves and full-length bottoms.
Shorts, trousers, cami or shirt: the right cut
- Cami and shorts: the lightest option, for warm nights.
- Button-up shirt and trousers: the great classic, comfortable and a little chic, that you can keep on for breakfast.
- Long sleeves and shorts: a good compromise for spring and autumn.
- Babydoll and nightdress: nothing tight at the waist, and plenty of freedom of movement.
- Kimono and negligee: to slip on over your pyjamas as you move around the house, tied at the waist with a belt.
Finding the right size
Pyjamas are best chosen loose: you should be able to sit cross-legged, raise your arms and turn over in bed without anything pulling. Many of our styles follow Asian sizing, which is smaller than French sizes: if in doubt, go one size up.
The safest approach is to compare the measurements given on the product page with a pair of pyjamas you love, laid flat: chest width, waist, length. Our women's size guide explains how to measure yourself.
Caring for your pyjamas
- Cotton and knit: machine wash at 30 °C, inside out, with similar colours.
- Satin: cold delicates cycle, in a laundry bag, without fabric softener; dry flat or on a hanger, never in the tumble dryer.
- Lace and embroidery: turn the garment inside out and use a laundry bag to avoid snags.
- Iron satin on a low setting, on the reverse side.
A gift idea
A pretty pair of pyjamas is an easy gift that's always appreciated: for Christmas, a birthday, a new baby or simply as a treat. Choose a loose cut, and one size up if you're unsure of their measurements.
