Women's clothing size guide: how to choose the right size online
A size M isn't the same everywhere. Many clothes sold online are made in Asia and follow Asian sizing, which is narrower than French sizes: an Asian M often corresponds to a French S, sometimes to an XS. This guide helps you choose the right size first time, and avoid a return.
The simple rule: one size up
For our women's clothing, the product page says so when the style follows Asian sizing. In that case, go one size up from your usual size. If you're between two sizes, take the larger one. For a loose or oversized cut, your usual size may be enough; for a fitted cut (sports vest, playsuit, satin trousers), one size up is almost always right.
French size equivalents
Here is the usual equivalence between letter sizes and the number sizes used in France:
- XS = 34
- S = 36
- M = 38
- L = 40
- XL = 42
- XXL or 2XL = 44
- 3XL = 46
- 4XL = 48
- 5XL = 50
These are the equivalents used in French ready-to-wear. On a garment with Asian sizing, allow for a one-size difference: if you wear a 38 (M), go for an L.
Taking your measurements in two minutes
A dressmaker's tape measure is all you need. Measure yourself in your underwear, without pulling the tape tight:
- Bust: at the fullest point, with the tape level across your back.
- Waist: at the narrowest point, usually just above the belly button.
- Hips: at the widest point, about 20 cm below the waist.
When a product page gives measurements in centimetres, compare them with your own measurements rather than with the size letter: it's the most reliable method.
The safest trick: measure a garment you love
Take a garment of the same type from your wardrobe that fits you well. Lay it flat, without stretching it, and measure:
- for a top: the width from armpit to armpit, then the length from shoulder to hem;
- for trousers: the width of the waistband laid flat, then the inside leg length.
Multiply a flat width by two to get the circumference. These are your ideal measurements, those of a garment you already enjoy wearing.
Reading the fit on the product page
- Fitted, close to the body: the garment hugs your figure. A stretchy knit is a little forgiving, a stiff fabric not at all: go one size up.
- Straight: the garment hangs without clinging. Your usual size or one size up.
- Loose, oversized: the volume is intentional. Your usual size, unless you want a very roomy look.
- Elasticated waist: it adapts to several waist sizes. Choose according to your hips.
