Baby and kids' clothing sizes: a guide to choosing the right size
Ordering children's clothes online means aiming for the size they'll be in two weeks' time, not the size they are today. Labels don't all speak the same language — months, years, centimetres — and sizing varies from one country to another. Here's how to find your way without getting it wrong.
The golden rule: height, not age
Two children of the same age can be ten centimetres apart. The most reliable measure is therefore their height: with your child standing against a wall, barefoot, heels against it, lay a book flat on their head and measure down to the floor. For a baby who can't stand yet, measure them lying down, from head to heels.
Many of our clothes are labelled directly in centimetres: “90 cm” means “for a child about 90 cm tall”.
Approximate size equivalents
- 60 to 67 cm: newborn to 6 months
- 73-74 cm: 6 to 12 months
- 80-81 cm: 12 to 18 months
- 86-92 cm: 18 months to 2 years
- 98-100 cm: 3 years
- 104-110 cm: 4 to 5 years
- 116-120 cm: 6 to 7 years
- 128-130 cm: 8 years
- 140 cm: 9 to 10 years
These guidelines are averages: if your child is between two sizes, always go for the larger one.
Why go one size up
- They grow: a baby gains several centimetres in a few months. A slightly big garment can be worn straight away with the sleeves rolled up, and lasts the whole season.
- Asian sizing runs small: many clothes are made to narrower size charts than French sizes. Our product pages say so when that's the case.
- In winter, you layer up: a jacket or cardigan is worn over a jumper, so there needs to be room underneath.
The safest trick: measure a garment that fits
Lay flat a garment of the same type that fits your child well, and measure it: width under the arms, length from collar to hem, sleeve length. Compare with the measurements given on the product page, where available.
Safety first
- For children under 7, avoid drawstrings and cords on the hood or around the neck: they can get caught. Choose styles without them.
- Regularly check that buttons and small appliqués are securely sewn on, especially for babies who put everything in their mouths.
- Wash a new garment before it is worn for the first time.
